Do you remember the first time you traveled to a new place, a distant land that was quite unlike the place you knew as home? You packed your bags, your heart raced with excitement, and you trembled with a bit of fear and anticipation. What would you encounter on your journey? Would you even enjoy your destination?
When I became a Christian, I had no idea what had happened to me, and I certainly was unaware of the adventure ahead. The most unanticipated facet of my journey with God may be summed up in one small word with big meaning: grace. The world doesn’t know about grace, and the church doesn’t always prepare you for grace. Why? Because there is very little experience of grace in the world and precious little understanding of it in the church. The definition of grace is difficult to articulate in words.
Earlier this year I met with my friend Ney Bailey, an author and lover of God. We were talking about what it means to know God. She stopped in the midst of our conversation, turned to me, grabbing my full attention, and said, "Catherine, do you know what book I think you should write next?"
"What book, Ney?" I asked.
"I think you should write about grace. People don’t experience grace. They don’t know it. I think grace is so important for us to understand and experience in our lives."
My eyes widened. "Ney, you’re not going to believe this, but guess what—grace is my next book! I’ve already begun studying and writing. God’s grace is one of the most powerful aspects of my life."
Ney and I just looked at each other and smiled. We knew our conversation was one of those God-ordained moments where eternity touches the heart and humanity collides with God and His plans. God confirmed my assignment through Ney. I thought, God, You must have an amazing adventure in store for all of us.
And so, dear friend, I invite you to enter the land of grace. Grace is God’s land, the place where He lives and works, and the terrain where He plants you and grows you into a mature, healthy, vibrant child of the King. Grace is behind, before, and surrounding every single gift you receive from God. So pack your bags, dear friend, for once you embark on God’s grace adventure, there’s no turning back. When you truly experience God’s extravagant grace, everything you’ve known before pales in comparison, and you won’t look behind you—only forward, on into eternity.
