Prayer ~
The American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language
~ prayer [prair] or [prâr] n.
~ a reverent petition made to God, a god, or another object of worship; an act of communion with God, a god, or another object of worship, such as in devotion, confession, praise, or thanksgiving.
Origin ~ 1250–1300; ME preiere < OF < ML precāria, n. use of fem. of precārius obtained by entreaty; 1400–50; late ME preyare.
Prayer ~ Easton's 1897 Bible Dictionary.
(1) Prayer is the intercourse of the soul with God, not in contemplation or meditation, but in direct address to Him. Prayer may be oral or mental, occasional or constant, ejaculatory or formal.
(2) Prayer presupposes a belief in the personality of God, His ability and willingness to hold intercourse with us, His personal control of all things and of all His creatures and all their actions. Acceptable prayer must be sincere (Heb. 10:22), offered with reverence and godly fear, with a humble sense of our own insignificance as creatures and of our own unworthiness as sinners, with earnest importunity, and with unhesitating submission to the divine will. Prayer must also be offered in the faith that God is, and is the hearer and answerer of prayer, and that He will fulfill His word.
(3) Prayer is of different kinds, secret (Matt. 6:6); social, as family prayers, and in social worship; and public, in the service of the sanctuary. Intercessory prayer is enjoined (Num. 6:23; Job 42:8; Isa. 62:6; Ps. 122:6; 1 Tim. 2:1; James 5:14).

Writing out my prayer requests on the Adore God In Prayer pages [of The Quiet Time Notebook™] was the starting point for my new prayer growth plan. I thought, 'Now I want to go deeper and focus on specific areas for growth.' I prayed over a list of considerations: the importance of learning to talk with God, the use of Scripture, the various types of prayers in the Bible, learning from others, writing my own prayers, expressing and tracking my prayer growth, and knowing the character of God. The I looked to the Bible as my university of prayer with four classrooms that will teach me how to pray: the psalms, the promises, the prayers, and the people. With these ideas in mind I developed The Passionate Prayer Growth Plan™ - ten new areas to help me grow in my life of prayer. And I designed ten journal-style prayer pages to add to the Adore God In Prayer section of [The Quiet Time Notebook™].
