Trust ~
The American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language
~ trust (truhst) n.
~ reliance on the integrity, strength, ability, surety, etc., of a person or thing; confidence; confident expectation of something; hope.
Faith ~ Easton's 1897 Bible Dictionary.
(1) Faith is in general the persuasion of the mind that a certain statement is true (Phil. 1:27; 2 Thess. 2:13). Its primary idea is trust. A thing is true, and therefore worthy of trust. It admits of many degrees up to full assurance of faith, in accordance with the evidence on which it rests.
(2) The warrant or ground of faith is the divine testimony, not the reasonableness of what God says, but the simple fact that he says it. Faith rests immediately on, "Thus saith the Lord." But in order to this faith the veracity, sincerity, and truth of God must be owned and appreciated, together with his unchangeableness. God's word encourages and emboldens the sinner personally to transact with Christ as God's gift, to close with him, embrace him, give himself to Christ, and take Christ as his. That word comes with power, for it is the word of God who has revealed himself in his works, and especially in the cross. God is to be believed for his word's sake, but also for his name's sake.
(3) The faith=the gospel (Acts 6:7; Rom. 1:5; Gal. 1:23; 1 Tim. 3:9; Jude 1:3).

Context for The Trusting In The Names Of God Devotional Study Pages

Once you have discovered a name or attribute of God, write what you have learned. In the course of my studies, I have designed special Trusting In The Names Of God devotional Bible study pages for the Quiet Time Notebook™ (available from Quiet Time Ministries), but your journal or lined notebook paper will work as well. When you first discover a name of God, write out the name, the Hebrew or Greek transliteration, citing the significant verse and its historical context. Using a Word study tool such as the Hebrew-Greek Key Word Study Bible by Zodhiates or the NASB Exhaustive Concordance, write a definition and description. For example, in Genesis 1:1 we discover the first mention of God: “In the beginning God…” In the Hebrew-Greek Key Word Study Bible, turning to Genesis 1:1, above the word “God” is the number “430”. That number is the “Strong’s number” from A.H. Strong’s numbering system of all the words in the Bible. Simply look at #430 in the Hebrew dictionary in the back of the Hebrew-Greek Key Word Study Bible, and you will discover the Hebrew name for God, Elohim with a definition. If you use an exhaustive Bible concordance, simply look up the word “God”, identify the number (430) to the right of Genesis 1:1, then look in the Hebrew dictionary for #430. After you have determined the definition for the name, read the surrounding verses, and summarize the historical situation.

How can you declare God’s names? The best way is to talk with God in prayer about what you have discovered as you have drawn near to Him. These distinct declarations are your affirmations to God, yourself (mind, heart, and soul), and to others. You may even choose to write out a prayer in your journal or on the Trusting In The Names Of God devotional Bible study pages for the Quiet Time Notebook (see Appendix for example). Start with the words, “Lord, You are….” Then, list everything you are learning about Him from His Word. I don’t always write out my prayers, but I have found that when I do put prayers on paper, I more readily understand their spiritual significance. And remember that declaring the names of God brings honor to His name. One of the ten commandments instructs us to not take the Lord’s name in vain (Exodus 20:7) because we are not to dishonor God’s name in our speech or in our lives. Praying the names of God is an honorable privilege.

How can we depend on God’s names? You may choose to write a prayer in your journal or on the Trusting In The Names Of God devotional Bible study pages for the Quiet Time Notebook (See Appendix for example). Begin your prayer, “Lord, I need you because…“, then outline the nature of your needs. In essence, you are taking your hands off the wheel, and turning the controls of your life over to your Lord. This decision requires a surrender of self and your need to control. This decision places your reliance on what you have discovered in God’s Word about Who He is, what He promises about Himself, His ways, and His works. You have left all the “what ifs” in the dust and you are casting yourself entirely on the character and Person of God Himself.

Harvest House Publishers ~

How can we delight in God’s names? Delighting in the names of God is the result of trusting in God. To delight in His name, you may wish to write a prayer to the Lord in your journal or on the Trusting In The Names Of God devotional Bible study pages for the Quiet Time Notebook (See Appendix or Figure 3 for example). Begin with “Lord, I love You because…” You may want to praise and worship the Lord using a hymnbook or worship music. Take time to celebrate the magnificent beauty of your Lord. When you delight and appreciate His beauty, He is not the only One who appreciates your love for Him. Others will take notice of your delight in God.
