Promises ~
The American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language
~ prom·ise  (prŏm'ĭs) n.
1. A declaration assuring that one will or will not do something; a vow; Something promised.
2. Indication of something favorable to come; expectation: a promise of spring in the air.
3. Indication of future excellence or success: a player of great promise.

Amen ~ Easton's 1897 Bible Dictionary.
This Hebrew word means firm, and hence also faithful (Rev. 3:14). In Isa. 65:16, the Authorized Version has "the God of truth," which in Hebrew is "the God of Amen." It is frequently used by our Saviour to give emphasis to his words, where it is translated "verily." Sometimes, only, however, in John's Gospel, it is repeated, "Verily, verily." It is used as an epithet of the Lord Jesus Christ (Rev. 3:14). It is found singly and sometimes doubly at the end of prayers (Ps. 41:13; 72:19; 89:52), to confirm the words and invoke the fulfilment of them. It is used in token of being bound by an oath (Num. 5:22; Deut. 27:15-26; Neh. 5:13; 8:6; 1 Chr. 16:36). In the primitive churches it was common for the general audience to say "Amen" at the close of the prayer (1 Cor. 14:16).

The promises of God are 'Amen'; i.e., they are all true and sure (2 Cor. 1:20).

Biblical and Historical Context for The Promise Pages

Excerpted from Day Seven, 'The Magnificent Promises Of God,' Walking With The God Who Cares©2007
Harvest House Publishers ~

Charles Haddon Spurgeon [Faith’s Checkbook] likens a promise of God as a check that we write from the vast resources and wealth of the Bible’s bank account. Each check is signed by God Himself; He is the One making the promise. A promise is only as good as the one who makes it. And God is the faithful promise-giver (1 Corinthians 1:9, see also Psalm 31:15 ESV ), and He cannot lie (Hebrews 6:18 ).

F.B. Meyer has said, “There is hardly any position more utterly beautiful, strong, or safe, than to put the finger upon some promise of the Divine word, and claim it. There need be no anguish, or struggle, or wrestling; we simply present the check and ask for cash, produce the promise, and claim its fulfillment; nor can there be any doubt as to the issue.”

from 'Walking With The God Who Cares'©2007, Harvest House Publishers ~
"God wants to give you hope in every situation. Every Christian has endured difficult times, and we know that God can use suffering to transform sinners into saints. But how can believers remain confident that their trials are making them stronger and not tearing them down? How can they keep a deep and abiding sense of joy in everyday life, much less in the midst of sorrow and pain? The answer is an intimate relationship with the God who cares and a complete dependence on His Word." - Catherine Martin

Catherine Martin and Writing A Check On The Promise Pages
Friends, while I was writing Walking With The God Who Cares, I found myself drawing upon the promises of God literally on a moment by moment basis. I kept returning again and again to the concept of writing a check on the promises of God as presented by Spurgeon, Meyer, and others. One day in my quiet time, I decided to design the Promise Pages as a special section for The Quiet Time Notebook™. Embracing a promise is never a "name it and claim it" process where you determine the outcome of God's Word; claiming a promise of God never means telling God what He is going to do. Rather, these Promise Pages are an opportunity for you, privately and personally, to apply the promises from God's Word to your everyday life. The Promise Pages are formally titled, “Treasure From God’s Promises In His Word,” reflecting the theme of trusting in His promises found through the diligent sudy of the Word of God, discussed in Days Seven, Eight, and Ten of Walking With The God Who Cares ~ A 30-Day Journey book. They are also referred to as “Write A Check On The Promise Pages” emphasizing the goal of application of the truth of Scripture to your daily life. These pages are designed to be placed in the ‘Read and Study God’s Word’ section of The Quiet Time Notebook™, but might as easily be applied to any of the sections within The P.R.A.Y.E.R. Quiet Time Plan™.
